What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese healing modality that uses a smooth-edged tool to stroke or gently scrape your skin. This motion is meant to move your Qi and release any pathogenic Cold or Heat from your channels.

How does Gua Sha work?

Gua Sha is said to raise the Sha (aka. sand) which appears as small, red dots that show on your skin. This action brings fresh blood flow to the area which may help to reduce toxins in the muscles and promote healing.

What are the benefits of Gua Sha?

There have been several clinical trials suggesting that Gua Sha may help reduce the pain of migraines, however, the researchers suggest that there needs to be further study on this. One clinical trial suggested that Gua Sha can help to reduce your acute neck pain. However, the researchers could not determine if chronic neck pain was reduced. Since Gua Sha is usually applied in conjunction with acupuncture the pain-reducing effects are enhanced and could therefore help with your chronic neck pain when used together.

Is Gua Sha covered by insurance?

Gua Sha is not covered by insurance and will be considered an out-of-pocket expense. Before we apply Gua Sha we will discuss the cost and the need for the treatment so that you can make the best decision for your health.
